Tag-based segmentation is a powerful E-goi feature to easily engage unique and granular sets of contacts.
What are tags?
Tags help you quickly slice and dice contacts in E-goi based on their unique profile and behaviour for relevant, ultra-personalised campaigns.
Use cases
Tags are extremely flexible (they can be whatever you need) can be used in a number of ways:
- Interaction-based segmentation
- Tag clicked_blackfriday_emai: To segment customers who clicked through a specific campaign
- Tag visited_product_page_x: For people who visited a product page on your site.
- Tag didn’t_open_email_last_3m: To re-engage inactive contacts.
- Purchase-intent segmentation
- Tag vip_buyer: For customers with more than X purchases.
- Tag abandoned_cart: For those who added items to their cart but didn't complete a purchase.
- Tag subscription_canceled: For clients who cancelled their subscription.
- Interest-based segmentation
- Tag interest_email_marketing: For people who showed interest in your email marketing content.
- Tag prefers_whatsapp: For people preferring WhatsApp to contact you.
- Tag registered_for_ai_webinar: For people signing up for your AI event.
- Demographic segmentation
- Tag b2b_software_client: For leads that are software companies.
- Tag b2c_fashion_ecommerce: For fashion-minded shoppers.
- Tag age_group_25_34: For age-based segmentation.
- Funnel segmentation
- Tag hot_lead: For sales-primed contacts.
- Tag in_negotiation: For potential clients in your sales pipeline.
- Tag high_churn_risk: For unhappy clients with high risk of leaving.
Requirements
- Any E-goi account.
- User permissions for managing tags.
Costs
Tags are freely available in any E-goi account. You can create as many as you like.
Any campaigns you send (eg. email, SMS) to tagged contacts may have their own costs, which depend on your E-goi plan.
Before you begin
Tags versus segments
Tags in E-goi are similar to segments, with a couple caveats:
Tags
- Can be quickly and easily added to any contact or set of contacts (eg. just edit the contact and tag them).
- Picture them as post-its you can label your contacts with.
- They're binary (a contact either has a tag or doesn’t).
- Can be automatically added or removed via automations.
- Ideal for quickly marking specific interests or actions of contacts (e.g., clicked on an email, visited page X, purchased product Y).
Segments
- They'll filter your whole contact list based on rules and conditions you choose.
- Any time contacts match the segment's conditions, they'll be included. When they no longer matching, they'll be excluded from the segment.
- Segments can mix multiple conditions, including tags (eg, "has tag X" and "didn't open emails in the last 60 days").
- Handy for more complex and advanced segmentation duties.
In practice
- Use tags to label your contacts with highly specific info.
- Use segments to create dynamic contact groups based on rules, criteria or tags themselves.
Step-by-step
Creating and managing tags
1) Go to the Contacts menu and click Contacts for the contact list you'll be creating tags on.
2) In the contact listing, head over to the left-hand panel, under My tags and hit Manage tags.
Creating tags
Click Create, name your tag and click Save.
Editing tags
Click the tag's pencil icon. You can then change the tag's name and colour. Hit Save when you’re done. If you already got contacts tagged with it, you'll see your changes in them.
Deleting tags
Click the tag's trash icon. Confirm it and the tag will be gone. If any contacts had been tagged with it, they''ll no longer have it.
Tagging contacts
Tagging a single
1) Edit the contact, head over to the tags section in the contact's profile and choose what to tag them with. Close the window to return to the contact listing.
2) In the contact listing, you should see your tag in the Tags column for that contact.
Tagging multiple contacts
1) Choose the contacts you'll be editing (tick the checkmark to the left of each one), hit Actions (upper left corner of the contact listing), then click Contact actions.
2) In the actions window, under Options, select Add tag, choose what they'll be tagged with and click Apply.
Tagging all contacts in a segment
1) Create or load the segment. When you see the contacts for that segment, click Actions (upper left corner of the contact listing), then click Contact actions.
2) In the actions window, under Options, select Add tag, choose what they'll be tagged with and click Apply.
Auto-tagging form sign-ups
1) Edit the sign-up form or landing page. In the Behavior step, under Tag contacts with, select the tags that will be automatically added to any people signing up.
Auto-tagging contacts on import
1) See the contact import how-to
Auto-tagging contacts anywhere along an automation
1) Create or edit your automation. Go to where in the automation you want something to happen and place there:
- An Add tag action if you want any contacts to be tagged with a specific tag.
- A Tag added trigger if you want the automation to trigger an action whenever contacts are tagged with a specific tag.
Sending campaigns to tagged contacts
1) In the campaign's sending step, under Segment, select Choose segments and pick the tag you need.
2) Proceed to the Checklist step, head over to For whom? and be sure your tag is there.
3) Hit Send campaign. It'll be sent out to to all contacts tagged with the tag you selected.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I send a campaign to both tags and segments?
Your campaign will be sent to ALL contacts with the tag and also to ALL contacts matching the segment.
This means E-goi will combine both sets of contacts and send the campaign to any contact matching at least one of the sets.
